His father died when he was very young. His mother was pregnant with her 5th child (Joe was the 3rd). His older brother was shot and died on 24/4/1918, on the Somme while trying to retrieve a wounded comrade. Joe married Lilian Stanley.  Children - 2 daughters, 2 sons. Grandchildren - 2 granddaughters, great grandchildren - 3 great grandsons, 2 great granddaughters. 
Worked tirelessly for Returned Soldiers & Sailors TB Association, then TPI.
