Biography contributed by Robert Wight

According to several eyewitness reports (Red Cross file) Gunner Roscrow was killed by direct shell fire at Westhoek Ridge after he had gone back to his dugout to retrieve a pair of boots he had left behind.

Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

The sad news was conveyed by the Rev. W. H. Holtham to Mr. and Mrs. T. Roscrow, of Grant-street, Long Gully, last week, that their eldest son, Gunner John Leslie Roscrow, had been killed in action in France. Gunner Roscrow left with reinforcements early in the year, and had not been long in France. Previous to enlisting he was employed at Mr. J. Warren's drapery establishment, in Hargreaves-street. He was an active member of the Wilson-street Methodist choir. Gunner Roscrow was 24 years of age and was of fine physique. Another younger son of Mr. Roscrow is also on active service.
Bendigonian (Bendigo), 22 November 1917.
