H L Hendry ( Horry)
My Uncle Horry was a champion person.
He was raised "in the Port of Adelaide" and was small in stature, therefore became a fully fledged jockey.
He was a very successful jockey and rode many winners in Adelaide and Country racetracks.
Horry's weight increase put paid to his career as a jockey, but he soon turned his hand to racehorse training.
His early training career commenced at the Victoria Park racecourse, his stables being located in Dulwich.
Horry trained hundreds of winners over a career of some 60 years and taught two champion jockeys as apprentices, James (Jim) Devereaux and Thomas (Tom)
Edward Burke.
Some notable horses include, Sunny Coronation, Time Circle, Rain Circle, Romantic Pride, Ex Officio, Good Conduct and Bruang a steeplechaser who won the Grand National Steeple at Victoria Park racecourse.
Horry's wife Jean ( nee Smith ) left him a widower for some years.
Horry and Jean had one Daughter, Christine, who married a jockey, Michael Domingo and they raised three boys, Andrew, Mark and Luke.
All three men have been successful in their chosen careers.
Following a distinguished racing career, Horry retired and became a very competent golfer, rarely attending the racetrack.
Horry passed on peacefully in his early 90's.
