Biography

Son of John Hugh BAWDEN and Mary nee HENERY

Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Cornelius Bawden was born on 27th May 1886 at Port Augusta, South Australia. On his attestation papers he listed his mother Mrs. Mary Bawden as his next of kin with the residential address – Dale Street, Port Adelaide, South Australia. He was a boilermaker’s assistant by occupation and as stated by his description upon his enlistment, had auburn hair with blue eyes with weight 66kg and chest measurement 32.5 35 inches and a height of 6 feet 0.5 inches.

On 7th September 1915, he enlisted at the age of 29. On 7th February 1916. He belonged to the 27th Battalion, 9th reinforcement and his regimental number was 3764. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on 7th February 1916 and arrived at Port Suez, Egypt on 11 March 1916. On 2nd April 1916, he was taken on strength and was moved to the 50th Battalion. While fighting in the Battle of Somme which was from 1/07/1916 – 3/09/1918, he was wounded in action on 14th August 1916 in France due to a gunshot wound on the right arm. Information from the war diary records said that on that same day – 14th August 1916, it was a “terrific bombardment”. It was also mentioned that many artillery guns were fired and exploded on the trenches and soldiers were “cut” to pieces. The stretcher bearers and runners were having a ‘difficult task’ and were augmented. Casualties were from 10-12 noon with about 45 killed and 105 were wounded. Lieutenant Bayines was also wounded and in shell shock. From this we can tell that Bawden was among the 105 who were wounded. On 21st August 1916 he was sent to England from France and then admitted to hospital. Then, on 12th December 1916 he was again admitted to hospital due to V.D.

He was absent from duty 59 days because he was admitted in the hospital. On 2nd March 1917 he was discharged from hospital and he left for the depot. On 12th September 1917 he proceeded overseas back to France to reinforce his unit in the 50th Battalion. Then, 1st October 1917 he rejoined his unit who were fighting the battle of Broodseinde Ridge which occurred on 4th October 1917. His unit then fought in the battle of German Spring Offensive on 1st March 1918. On 21st March 1918 he was admitted to Hospital because he was sick. He was then discharged and left hospital on 25th May 1918. This suggests that he wasn’t present for the Battle of Morlancourt which occurred on 27th March 1918. He then fought the battle of Hamel on 4th July 1918 and the battle of Amiens on 8th August 1918. During the Battle of Amiens, he was wounded. It was mentioned in his records that he got grenade wounds and was then admitted to hospital on 16th September 1918. He passed away on the same day at the age of 32 due to the grenade wounds and is buried at Heath Cemetery: Plot IX, Row B, Grave No.11.
