Biography contributed by tony griffin

Edwin Keith Omond was the son of Edwin Charles and Kathleen (nee Brady) Omond. Born at Port Augusta on 6 October 1915, the 24 year old motor trimmer enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces at Southwark on the 12th August 1940.

Taken on strength of the Australian Army Service Coy he was appointed to 8 Auxiliary Horse Transport Company at Woodside. On 9 August 1941 he married Mary Monica Hynes at the Queen of Angels, Thebarton. Edwin was called up for full time military service on 27 January 1942 and immediately appointed to 58 Anti Aircraft Coy Royal Australia Engineers at Fort Largs. During the year he was promoted to Corporal, then Lance Sergeant before being attached to a Potential Officers Course in November. In April 1943 Edwin was commissioned as a Lieutenant and after qualifying at a School of Searchlights was recommended for future employment as an Officer with Anti Aircraft Searchlight Duties. In November 1944 Edwin was taken on strength of 166 Australian Searchlight Troop before embarking for escort duty on Macedon to Sydney where he was attached to 10 Australian Mobile Laundry Decontamination Unit.

In July 1945, while with 13 Army Ordnance Depot at Tolga in the tablelands of North Queensland, Edwin was admitted to 47 Australian Camp Hospital suffering from a ruptured right leg muscle. After a month, as the condition of his leg worsened, he was evacuated to 116 Australian General in Charters Towers and then flown from Cairns to 112 Australian General Hospital in Brisbane. Moved by ambulance train Edwin was eventually admitted to 105 AGH at Daw Park Hospital. Edwin endured many months of intermittent treatment at 105 AGH and convalescence at Kalpara Convalescent Depot before he was considered fit for discharge.
