Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

His younger brother, 3934 Henry William Smyth, had been reported missing (later reported killed), at Fromelles on 19 July 1916, aged 20.

Edward had married Mabel Lucille in 1916, just prior to leaving Australia for the front. He had been wounded at Bullecourt during May 1917 before he was mortally wounded by shrapnel on 4 October 1917. He died the next day in the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.
