Great Uncle Bill
I think this man is my great Uncle Bill. I have no living relatives who could confirm this, but it's a very unusual name and my father's family were from Broken Hill, where Bill was born.
My father told several stories about Uncle Bill.
One was that he had a massive vinyl record collection, so large that the ABC would borrow records from him. He lived in Sydney, Glebe I think, and he used to sit on his verandah and act as a lookout for the pub, where they were running an illegal SP bookmaking operation. He would play a certain song very loudly when he saw the police coming.
Dad said that Bill had to buy the house he was renting because the weight of his record collection had bowed the floors. Apparently they were stacked everywhere.
Unfortunately no-one realised the value of his collection and it was split up amongst various family and friends after his death.
