Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Arthur Gilbert Treble was reported wounded in action, 20 July 1916; subsequently reported missing in action, 20 July 1916, and buried 'in the vicinity of Fleurbaix'.
At a Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 1 August 1917, he was pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'.
There were a couple of witnesses in Arthur Gilbert Treble’s Red Cross file who stated they saw him killed at Fromelles (Fleurbaix).
His younger brother, 1248 Pte. George Treble 29th Battalion AIF, had also been killed in action 2 March, 1917, aged 26.
They were the sons of Arthur Richard and Ellen Treble, of Bromley, Victoria. Arthur’s place of association was Dunolly, Victoria.
The mother Mrs. Ellen Treble wrote one letter to Base records regarding her still missing son Arthur Gilbert Treble on 27 August 1916.
“I have had word from the (Red Cross) he was seen fall at Fleurs if so why has all his effects never came over before now and you have never sent me any word direct or how he came by his death if he is gone, …I do not know what to think, I have not got his deferred pay, nor my poor son George’s, both gave their life that shirkers may live in luxury, God help us poor mothers.”
