Elder of two brothers (Leslie and Donald) who served in WWII, Sapper Leslie James Whitrod (Service No:S14726) initially served in the Militia from 4 December 1939 as a Sapper attached t o 4MD Field Engineers RAE. Sapper Whitrod enlisted in the ACMF on 20 March 1941, and in July 1944 marched out to 24 Field Coy. Sapper Whitrod was attached to 54 Field Park Coy at Discharge on 3 December 1945.
Les was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1920, eldest of two children of Stanley (Stan) Richard Whitrod (b1893 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Priscilla Victoria Blanche Langley (b1894 in Petersburgh, South Australia). Stan was a Farm Labourer in Plympton in 1916 when he enlisted in the Army (Private; Service No:756), and he and Priscilla married in 1919 in Nangtika. The couple settled in Plympton, where they raised their family and Stan worked as a Labourer and Mental Asylum Attendant. In 1939 Stan was holidaying in Tooperang when he had an accident on his bicycle and died as a result of a fractured skull.
Les was working in Plympton as a Cabinetmaker in 1939 when he enlisted in the Militia, and in 1942 in Adelaide married Jacynth (Jace) Jane Atkinson (b 1917 at Carey Gully in South Australia) - Jace was working in Adelaide as a Window Dresser. Following his Discharge from the Army, Les and Jace settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Les worked as a Cabinetmaker and Carpenter. Jace died in 2007 and Les in 2016.
