Son of Henry Hayes and Annie Jane Hayes nee Short of Maryborough Road, Gympie, QLD
Brother of Herbert Henry Hayes who died of wounds on 27 August 1915 at Gallipoli and has no known grave. His name appears on the Lone Pine Memorial, Panel 46; William John Hayes who returned to Australia in late 1917 having served with the 15th Battalion
