Bert Venning
Bert was fostered by Grace and Isaac Teakle, whom he knew as 'Mater' and 'Pater'. He worked on the Teakle farm after leaving Gulnare school. He was working at Maitland when war broke out, and he and Oliver Watson rode their horses to Pt Pirie to enlist. They went as reinforcements for the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, but Bert was sent home after being wounded at Beersheba in 1916. He was later stationed at Laura as Recruiting Officer. Bert operated a small carrying business at Booleroo Centre until he moved to Adelaide in 1941 and enlisted in the 4th Garrison Battalion. He served at Outer Harbour, Sydney and Cook. After the war he was a warden at the Boys Reformatory (McNally Training Centre) at Magill until he retired through illhealth. At Booleroo Centre, as a member of the School Committee, Bert was treasurer for the Joint Schools Exhibition and Sports Committee for many years, and a member of the RSL. Bert's horse met the train regularly, where his cart was loaded or unloaded. He carried a circus lion and a leopard without turning a hair. but if he was ever asked to pull a bag of horsehair (a common farm by product) he bolted.
