During World War One he served with B Coy Mitcham as a private covering the period 1 October to 14 October 1917 when he was discharged as medically unfit. Due to having served for only two months, Samuel was not eligible for any war service awards.
During World War Two, he enlisted on 22 July 1940, aged 43 years 9 months, listing his wife as May Smith and his occupation as Assurance Agent. He served at Keswick in the Army Service Corps and was discharged on 26 November 1940.
