Died on this date – 30th January…… Percival Patrick Gribble was born at Boscastle, Cornwall, England with his birth was registered in the March quarter, 1877.

Percival Patrick Gribble came to Australia when he was 27 years old, having worked at the Portland Cement Works, Penarth as an Invoicing Clerk since leaving school. According to information supplied by his sister for the Roll of Honour - Percival Patrick Gribble was advised by his Doctor to leave England & not return due to his chest trouble.

On 1st June, 1916 Percival Patrick Gribble enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) at Cootamundra, NSW as a 39 year old, single, Miner.

Private Gribble embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 25th October, 1916 with “B” Company, 7th Reinforcements, 55th Battalion & disembarked at Devonport, England on 28th December, 1916.

He was posted to “C” Company of 14th Training Battalion in Wiltshire, England.

On 23rd January, 1917 Private Gribble was admitted to Military Hospital at Fovant, Wiltshire, England with Bronchitis.

Private Percival Patrick Gribble died at 9.40 am on 30th January, 1917 at Military Hospital, Fovant, Wiltshire, England from Broncho Pneumonia.

A telegram was sent by Dora Gribble, sister of the late Private Percival Patrick Gribble, to Administrative Headquarters A.I.F. on 31st January, 1917 which reads ”In great anxiety kindly state whether arrangements are being made to send home body of Pte PERCIVAL GRIBBLE 2909 and if presence of members family is desired.”

He was buried in St. Augustine of Hippo Churchyard, Penarth, Glamorganshire, Wales – Plot number S. 15. 2 in the family grave on south side & has a private headstone. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. No burial report was completed as circumstances prevented the attendance of a representative of Administrative Headquarters, A.I.F. London. The family were to be erecting a Memorial Stone in due course.
