Son of Edley Horald Joseph and Sarah Jane Evans, of Peterborough, South Australia; husband of Joyce Reta Evans, of Torrensville, South Australia.
Private Evans was called up and initially served as #S59449 from June 1942. Much of his service was spent at Terowie Trans-Shipment Centre, South Australia. In October 1943 he was sent to the Northern Territory where he was located until September 1944. On 18 October 1944 he married Joyce Reta Evans.
Pte Evans enlisted on 5 July 1945 in the AIF and was allotted #SX38810 although he had been in New Guinea from May 1945. In November 1945 he was admitted to 2/9 General Hospital at Moratai and was medically evacuated on 19 December 1945. He was in an RAAF Dakota air ambulance which was then reported missing between Ambon and Darwin. The aircraft had a crew of six as well as nineteen other passengers. The aircraft failed to arrive in Darwin and all personnel were later listed as deceased on 19 December 1945.
