Add my storyBiography
Harry Massingham enlisted at 28 years of age. It is likely he enlisted out of a sense of duty to himself, his King, his country and the Empire.
Harry enlisted on 28 Feb 1916, and he served until his discharge on 23 Oct 1919.
Harry was involved in the first attack of the Third Battle of Ypres - the Battle of Menin Road. There are records of his service on the Western Front until January 1918. He was wounded on the 6 November 1917 in Belgium, while trying to help stop the German Offensive. He was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal in Feburary 1919 and then was promoted to an increased rank that is hard to decipher from his records (but could be Sergeant).
He was discharged in October later that year. He received two service medals, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
After the war, he married Elizabeth Louise Massingham and they had a daughter - Marcelle Massingham. They lived in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney. Harry was part of the R.S.S. and the A.I.L.A.
He died at 54 years of age while the Second World War raged...
