45 years ago today, on the 18th January 1981, Private Oswald James Leo Johnson, 35th Battalion (Reg No-54780), clerk from 120 Church Street, Newcastle West, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. CATHOLIC 3-96. 2.

Born at Gosford, New South Wales on the 18th November 1898 to William Walter, died 8.2.1926, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., age 64, buried at CATHOLIC 1-G Spec. 86, from the corner of Parry (36?) and Dawson Streets, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., and Margaret Johnson, died 2.8.1954, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, mother of 2 daughters and 2 sons, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-G Spec. 86, from the corner of Parry (36?) and Dawson Streets, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 76 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W.; husband of Alma Florence Johnson nee Colgan, married 1920, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1.3.1973, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 48, sleeping at CATHOLIC 3-96. 4, Oswald enlisted on the 7th May 1918 with the New South Wales Reinforcement 8 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Feldmarschall on the 19th June 1918.

Admitted to hospital 2.10.1918 (not stated).

Commenced return to Australia 22.7.1919.

Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.

I have not located Mr. Johnson’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Oswald’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
