Biography contributed by Kaitlyn Leach

Douglas is my great grandfather whom I did not get to know but family members have given me some information along the way.

Douglas grew up in Maitland where his father was a fisherman.  Douglas too became a fisherman and built his own boat, he fished off the York Peninsula all of his life except for the time he spent in the Army.  Douglas Married Ivis Tonkin in Moonta, South Australia on the 27 March 1937.  Douglas and Ivis Had four children. Douglas and Ivis moved to Balgowan, South Australia where they built their family home.

Douglas did his Army Training at Portsea on Port Philip Bay, they also spent time at Queenscliffe. Douglas was a member of the 16 Aust Water Transport Operations Company (Small Craft) R.A.E. He progressed through the ranks until in June 1945 he was promoted to a Warrant Officer Grade 1. I am told by his daughter he had to go behind enemy lines to take in medication and food as well as bring out injured soldiers.

Douglas Recived a number of Medals

- 1939/45 Star
- Pacific Star
- War Medal 1959/45
- Australia Service Medal

In 7/5/45 Douglas was Transferred to New Guinea until 31/12/1945.  Where he was returned to the Army General Hospital in Victoria, due to Dermatitis on his left foot.

He passed away at the Repatriation Gerneral Hospitial just two weeks after moving into a retirement unit at Elizabeth Grove.
