Percival James Duffy, son of Nora Duffy, was born in Pekina, South Australia in 1892. He was a single 23-year-old, tall at about six feet and two inches with dark hair and brown eyes. He was Catholic, and had a job as a carpenter when he enlisted.
He enlisted on the 6th of August, 1915, in Adelaide, South Australia. He was assigned to the 7th reinforcement of the 27th Battalion, and his service number was 3093. Percival was ranked as a Sergeant Corporal. He was appointed to A Company of the Second Department Battalion. He embarked from Australia on the 12th of January, 1916.
The 27th Battalion was raised in South Australia in March 1915, with most of the recruits coming from Adelaide. The battalion left Australia in June, and after two months spent in Egypt training, they landed at Gallipoli on the 12th of September. At Gallipoli, the 7th Brigade, which included the 27th Battalion, reinforced the weary New Zealand and Australian Division. Overall, they had a fairly quiet time in Gallipoli, and departed the peninsula in December. They then proceeded to France as part of the Second Australia Division.
Percival was shot in France, on August the 6th, 1916, with wounds to his leg and left hand. He embarked on the 9th, on the hospital ship “Maheno”, and arrived at the Beaufort War Hospital the next day. He returned to France on the 23rd of December. After more months of fighting, Percival was appointed Lance Corporal on the 30th of March, 1917, then Lance Sergeant in November 1918.
After the war ended in November 1918, Percival took leave from the army in England on December 14th, rejoining from his leave on January 4th, 1919. He again went on leave to Paris on February 22nd, and returned 7 days later. He left the army on July 7th, 1919, and returned home to Australia for good.
