MYERS Arthur Mervyn MB BS

1910-1982

Arthur Mervyn Myers was born, in Sydney, on 27th April 1910. He was the only son of Arthur M and Lydia E Myers of Marrickville, NSW. He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide and graduated MB BS in 1933.  He spent two years at the Adelaide Hospital; this was followed by two years in Townsville, QLD, studying tropical medicine. He married Marjorie (Peg), Allan Strachan, in Queensland, on 23rd December 1936. His parents had now moved to Hobart, Tasmania. Myers returned to Adelaide and had a practice in North Adelaide and lived at 44 Cross Road, Ridge Park, SA, before going to Peterborough, SA, in 1940.

Myers served with the AAMC, at the rank of captain, in SA, with the CMF, in 52 Australian Camp Hospital (ACH) Wayville, SA; initially, he was called up for part-time duty on 20th November 1942 and called up for full-time duty from 1st November 1943. He joined 2/AIF on 3rd January 1944. His wife Marjorie, living in Jervois Street, Peterborough, SA, was named as his next of kin. Myers spent most of his service at 52 ACH and was seconded to the active CMF for service with the AIF, in January 1944. He was required to undertake some locum tenens for Dr Flaherty in Peterborough for seven weeks in mid-1944. He returned to serve in 4MD mainly at 52 ACH. Myers was attached to 4MD on full time duty during 1946.  His service is an example of the overall management of medical services to the community and the military. His appointment was terminated on 17th May 1946, and he was placed on the Reserve of Officers.

Myers returned to his practice in Peterborough before moving to Victor Harbour in 1957. He joined a general practice, in Victor Harbor, with Dr W (Bill) Collins and Dr Ben Brookman. He bought a former guest house ‘Lincoln' as his home and conducted his practice from there. Myers continued in full-time general practice until 1977 when he reduced his commitment to part-time. He was a medical officer at the South Coast District Hospital. He was still practising medicine when he died in February 1982. He was a keen participant in Lawn Bowls and had umpired for this sport nationally. He played golf and, in addition, had a ham radio licence and was an enthusiastic ham radio participant. Arthur Mervyn Myers died in Victor Harbour on 10th February 1982 and was survived by his wife, Peg, and sons Allan and Graham.
