Alfred left Australia on board HMAT Ballarat on 12 August 1916 and entered Codford , England with 13 Training Battalion on 30 September. His unit was sent to France on 14 March 1917, where he served throughout the war after joining the 50th Battalion. Alfred was admitted to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital with a “septum deflected” on 31 October 1918, but was able to rejoin the 50th on 1 December. He returned to Australia on the Ulysses on 22 July 1919 and was discharged on 16 October.
