LEWIS John Aylward MB BS

1921-1970

John Aylward Lewis was born on, 10th February 1921, in Adelaide. His parents were Eric Henry Lewis and Winifred Letitia, nee Bonython, the niece of Sir Langdon Bonython. His father was a medical practitioner who served in World War 1 in 11th FdAmb.  Lewis was educated at Adelaide High School and studied a shortened course in medicine, due to the war, at the University of Adelaide, graduating in 1944.

Lewis was made an honorary captain in the AAMC on 28th September 1944. He enlisted on 16th July 1945, at Wayville, and commenced full-time duty on that date. He was single, living with his parents, and gave his father, of 22 Fitzroy Terrace, Fitzroy as his next of kin. Following a brief admission to 105 AMH Daw Park, he was marched into 121 AGH on 18th July and sent to 2AAMC Trg Bn on 1st August 1945. On 2nd October he was again in Hospital. He was released to DDMS 4MD. He was attached 105 AMH. His appointment was terminated, and he was transferred to the Reserve of Officers on 14th August 1946.

Lewis married Margaret Gertrude on 26th January 1946. His address at the time of discharge was 30 Victoria Avenue Dulwich. According to the electoral role, Lewis and his wife were living in Victoria from the 1950s until at least 1967. John Aylward Lewis died at Hallett Cove on 26th October 1970 and is interred at Centennial Park, Pasadena SA.  His wife and four children Huw, Jane Mary and Phillip, survived him.
