Son of John Ralph Orrell and Mary Orrell of Westminster Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool, England.

Previously served with the Natal Rangers, South Africa which was disbanded four months after he enlisted.

Commenced return to Australia on 1 April 1919 aboard HT Shropshire disembarking on 16 May 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
