JAMES Colin Thomas MB BS
1920-2009
Colin James was born in Moonta, South Australia, on 6th September 1920. He was the son of Hugh Bowen James and Ethel May, nee Clutterbuck. He was educated at St Peters College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1943, and immediately enlisted into the Army.
James enlisted on 22nd January 1943, as a captain, at Wayville, naming his father as his next of kin. He was initially on the Reserve of Officers in the AAMC and was not called up for full-time duty until 4th May 1944, when was posted to 2 AAMC Trg Bn. He undertook the officers’ induction course, on 9th July 1944, at 105 AMH, Daw Park, SA, followed by a Hygiene and Sanitation Course at Coogee, New South Wales on 4th August 1944. James embarked for Thursday Island disembarking on 10th September 1944 for one month then returned to 4 MD. He was appointed RMO for 2/12th Inf Bn on 5th May 1945 and embarked in Townsville, on the Pontos H Ross, for Morotai, on 28th May 1945, disembarking on 8th June. He was allotted for duty with 2/5th FdAmb on 14th June 1945 and shortly afterwards on 20th June 1945 he was sent to Balikpapan, Borneo and reallotted to 2/4th FdAmb. James left Balikpapan, on 7th December 1945, for the SA LoC area for leave and reposting to the Inter-Service Medical Wing on 11th March 1946. On 21st September he was granted 90 days training leave. His appointment was terminated on 6th January 1947 and he was transferred to the Reserve of Officers.
James married Elizabeth Richardson on 23rd December 1946. She was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs JW Richardson of Mount Lofty House, Crafers, SA. Colin Thomas James died on 27th July 2009 and is interred in Centennial Park Cemetery Pasadena. His wife predeceased him.
