Potter was born 15 September 1918, in Adelaide. He worked as a shop assistant before the war and made the decision to take part within the military, enlisted at the age of 18 and 8 months. He was married and wife was called Lorna Effie and they lived at Frewville. He served with the voluntary militia from 25th May 1938before enlisting with the 2nd AIf on the 6 August 1943, at Frewville.
He served in South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. He was discharged on 8 November 1945.
