John Lionel Hayward was born in Yorketown, SA on the 8th October 1908.  He was the son of Dr Lionel Wykeham Hayward and Martha McCrae (Pattie), nee Lawrence.  He had an older brother Lawrence and younger sister Marjorie. Both his parents came from medical families, his grandfather, William Thornborough Hayward, was one of the first honorary physicians to the Adelaide Hospital and is recognised for bringing the Thomas splint to Australia. Hayward's maternal grandfather Alexander Lawrence was also a medical practitioner.  Hayward was educated at St Peter’s College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, where he was a rower and captain of the boat club. He graduated MB BS in 1932 and after graduation became a resident at the Adelaide Hospital. He travelled to England in 1934 where he gained his MRCP. While in England, Hayward married Marie Eva Therese Moll, of Geelong, VIC, in August 1935.  The wedding took place in London at St Clement Danes Church. She was the daughter of Henry Gottlieb Karl Frederick Moll and Mary Louisa, nee Herrmann. They were to have three daughters. They returned to Adelaide in September 1935, and Hayward returned to the Adelaide Hospital as an honorary clinical assistant physician from 1939, and at the same time assistant physician in the tuberculosis service at the Adelaide Chest Clinic and visiting physician to the Kalyra Sanatorium.  Before WW2 Hayward and his wife had two daughters, Judith Marie born 5th November 1937 and Mary Isabelle born 30th September 1940.

Hayward enlisted into the AAMC, in 1941, when he was living at 51 Portrush Road, Toorak Gardens, South Australia. While serving in the SA L of C area in 6th Lt FdAmb, he transferred to the 2/AIF, on 1st January 1942.  He was posted to 110 CCS at Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea and was promoted major at the same time. He was discharged due to illness on 19th September 1943.

Following the war, Hayward returned to the now Royal Adelaide Hospital as an honorary assistant physician until 1956, and honorary physician from 1956 until 1957.  He also maintained his position at the Adelaide Chest Clinic and the Kalyra Sanatorium. Hayward was a visiting physician at the Repatriation General Hospital, the Home for Incurables, now Julia Farr Home and honorary consulting physician to the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital. Hayward's eldest daughter Judith died suddenly in Switzerland and he retired in 1975. He moved to Perth to be with his two surviving daughters.  John Lionel Hayward died on 19th February 1990.
