Clarence left College and joined the Army in 1943, serving for the next 7 1/2 years. Three of these years were spent in Japan with the
Occupation Army after the horrific bombing of Hiroshima. Whilst there, in 1947, he started a school for the children of soldiers of the British Occupation Forces, the first English School in Japan.
