Sapper Alfred George Semple, of the Linotype Staff of the "Sydney Morning Herald," and son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Semple. of Telopea, Peats Ferry-road, Hornsby, who was killed in action in France on October 4. He was 26 years of age, and was married shortly before sailing. His father has for many years been a member of the composing staff of the "Sydney Morning Herald," and the late Sapper Semple served his apprenticeship in the same department of the paper.
He first enlisted In September, 1914, but after spending two days in camp was discharged owing to an injury to one of his feet. After undergoing an operation he again enlisted. In July, 1915, and was in camp for two months, when he was discharged the second time owing to his foot again causing trouble. In December, 1915, he enlisted for the third time, and after spending three months in camp sailed on March 11, 1916, as a sapper in the Engineers. He was trained for some time in Egypt, and also in England, and sailed for France in November, 1916. After being In action he was invalided to England suffering from debility, but about the beginning of August last he left again for France.
His widow is residing with his parents.
