Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Sergeant James Harold Field (Service Nos:SP15180/SX28810) initially enlisted in the PMF on 22 September 1941 as a Private in the Australian Army Canteen Services (AACS). Posted to Adelaide River, Northern Territory on 23 September 1941, he was a Sergeant with the AACS at Adelaide River on 3 March 1943 when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF the following day. Sergeant Field served in the Solomons (Treasury Islands) and Torokina (14 November 1944 - 12 December 1945), and was attached to AACS at Discharge on 19 March 1946.

James was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1917, youngest of two children of Oswald Field (b1887 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England) and Mary Ann Holroyd (b1892 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England). Oswald was a Warehouseman in 1911 when he immigrated with his younger brother Hilton, arriving in Melbourne in January 1912 on board the Themistocles - Oswald and Mary Ann (a Woolen Twister in Marsden) travelled on the same  ship, and both settled in Geelong. Oswald worked as a Clerk in Geelong, boarding with Mary Ann's parents, and Mary Ann was a Weaver. Oswald and Mary Ann married in 1914 in Geelong, where they raised their sons and Oswald was a Clerk and Warehouseman. The family moved to Sydney in the early 1930s - Oswald was an Agent (representative for woolen manufacturers), then in the mid 1930s moved to South Australia, where Oswald was a Company Manager and member of the State Wool Committee for South Australia. Oswald and Mary Ann retired to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, and later moved to Brisbane.

James started work as a Wool Classer in Thebarton, South Australia, and was an Accountant in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. In Brisbane in 1944 James married Hilary June Buchanan (b1925 in Melbourne, Victoria), and following his Discharge, the couple settled in Brisbane where they raised their family and James was an Accountant until his death in 1983. Hilary died in 1982.
