SAVAGE Arthur Charles MB BS

1904-1975

Arthur Charles Savage was born on 8th January 1904, in Perth, WA. He was the son of Arthur William Savage and Edith, nee Mellish. Savage studied medicine at the University of Adelaide where he graduated MB BS in 1928. He married Mrs Vanda Joy Heithersay, nee Sewell, on 13th July 1942, and they lived at Fisher Street, Fullarton, SA. They were later divorced. Her parents were Henry Reginald Spencer Sewell and Hilda Muriel, nee Galloway. He trained at the Adelaide Hospital, was an RMO at the Adelaide Children's Hospital (ACH) and the Glenside Mental Hospital. Later he was a Clinical Assistant at the Chest Clinic and a registrar at the Chest Clinic and Frome ward at the RAH. He was the medical superintendent at the Bedford Park Sanatorium from 1939 to 1961. He had been a captain with the AAMC for five years before 1940.

Savage had joined the CMF, in 1935, as a captain in the AAMC, but was discharged in 1940 as physically unfit.   He re-joined as an honorary captain on 18th November 1942 and called up for full-time duty on 15th February 1943 and transferred to 2/AIF on 17th February 1943. He was designated for CMF service only and was OC 85 Camp Hospital and later OC of 32 Camp Hospital. His appointment was terminated on 5th January 1944,  was transferred to the Reserve of Officers on 6th January 1944.

He continued his civilian practice after his discharge from the Army. He was an assistant physician and later physician at the RAH from 1947.  He was the medical superintendent at the Kalyra Sanatorium, Belair, SA, and Physician at the SA Department of Public Health. He was also an Honorary Anaesthetist at the RAH and the ACH. Arthur Charles Savage died in 1975.
