Son of Byles Stanyon Sudders Crowther and Isabelle May Crowther, of Adelaide, South Australia.  Reignlad played tennis, cricket and football and was a member of the Halifax Street Methodist Church Clubs and well as the Milita Team for football.   He was a member of the R.A.E. Field Regiment Militia for about 2 years before the war.  In civilian life he was a cabinet maker.  On enlistment he trained in Adelaide, Alice Springs and then Melbourne.  

His grandfather and great grandfather were both in the English Army and a grandfather on his mother's side was a military doctor in the English Army.
