46 years ago today, on the 16th May 1978, Corporal John Aloysius Joseph Mackel, 4th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company (Reg No-1521), loco fireman (East Greta Railways), from 350 High Street, West Maitland, New South Wales and Hamilton?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 85. CATHOLIC 3-81. 20.

Born at Waterloo, New South Wales about June 1892 as MACKLE to James and Ada Mackel; husband of Mary Selina Mackel nee Kirkaldy or Anderson (married 1924, Wickham, N.S.W., died 20.6.1959, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 65, sleeping here), John enlisted on the 20th January 1917 with the Railway Unit, Section 4 at the Show Ground Camp, Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 11th May 1917.

Admitted to hospital 19.7.1917 (pleurisy), 11.9.1918 (not stated), 23.11.1918 (left hand), 22.1.1919 (influenza & pleurisy, slight).

Granted leave to England from 6.10.1918 to 21.10.1918 and 5.6.1919 to 5.8.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 5.9.1919.

John arrived home on the 30th October 1919, being discharged on the 15th December 1919.

Mr. Machel’s name has been inscribed on the East Greta Railway Employees Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
