SOLOMON George Herbert MB BS FRCS FRACS

1906 – 1990

George Herbert Solomon was born, on 19th April 1906, in Adelaide.  He was the son of Isaac Herbert Solomon and Ethel Henrietta, nee Senior. He was educated at Holdfast Bay College, Glenelg, and St Peter's College, Adelaide.  He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide and graduated in 1927. He completed his resident year at the RAH, in 1928, and then went to the ACH for one year. Travelling to Hobart, Tasmania, he took a position as a senior house surgeon, from 1930 to 1931, before going to England as a resident surgeon at the Bedford Public Hospital, in Bedfordshire.  Returning to Adelaide, in 1934, he became a clinical assistant to the surgical section of the RAH. He married Nellie Annie Eleanor Cohen, on 25th March 1939; this was the first wedding in the newly opened Synagogue, in Adelaide.  Nellie was the daughter of Jessel Rupert Cohen and Eleanor May, nee Upton His best man was Dr Sidney Krantz. Solomon and his wife had three sons and a daughter.

Solomon had previously served, in the CMF, as a captain and served as an RMO in 10 Bn.  He transferred to the 2/AIF on 6th August 1942, and named his wife as his next of kin; they were living on South Terrace, Adelaide, at the time. Although posted to 101 AGH he was attached for a short time to 69 and 26 Lt Bty in Whyalla, SA, until 24th October 1942. While still posted to 101 AGH he was detached to 3rd Aust Field Training Bn until December 1942, when he was attached to 2/2nd FdAmb and deployed to Port Moresby, PNG. He was posted to 2/9th AGH until May 1943, before his return to Australia on 25th March 1944. Back in Australia, he was promoted to major and had several postings, as a surgeon, in QLD and NSW in 106, 102 and 112 AGH. He was again posted to 2/9th AGH and deployed to Morotai Island, Indonesia, from Brisbane, QLD, on 6th August 1945. He was evacuated from Morotai to 107 AGH, in Australia, with abdominal pain, on 26th November 1945. Then to 105 AMH, Adelaide, and diagnosed with hepatitis, pleurisy and sinusitis. He remained in SA, where he continued to have investigations and admissions to hospital. His appointment was terminated on 7th June 1946, and he was placed on the Reserve of Officers.

Following the war, Solomon went into general practice with Drs W Milencewicz and DF Hanson, in Victoria Square, Adelaide, and was now living on Robe Terrace, Medindie. George Herbert Solomon died in December 1990, survived by his wife and children.
