Biography
Sergeant George William Butcher was born on 17 June 1922 in Nailsworth, South Australia, to Richard Thomas Butcher and Catherine Everil (née Fisher). He grew up in the northern suburbs of Adelaide and worked as a federal civil servant prior to serving in the Second World War.
George enlisted in the Australian Military Forces on 17 July 1940 (Service No. S9142) and transferred to the AIF on 6 July 1942 (Service No. SX26039) at Gherang, Victoria. He served with the Armoured Corps, including the 12th Armoured Regiment and 3rd Australian Tank Battalion, rising to the rank of Sergeant.
His military service ended on 18 February 1944, when he was discharged medically unfit due to chronic respiratory illness, noted throughout his service records.
On 15 January 1949, George married Margaret Wellington at the Tusmore Methodist Church. The couple later resided in Greenacres.
George passed away on 5 October 1966, aged 44. His ashes were interred at Centennial Park Cemetery on 14 November 1966. He is remembered as a proud South Australian who served his country with dedication.
