Private Robert Bowles enlisted on 7 October 1941 and saw service in various States of Australia. In July 1943 he was hospitalised with a foreign body in his eye and cordite burns. On 16 June 1945 Pvte Bowles embarked for the Netherlands East Indies, arriving at Morotai on 29 June 1945. In October 1945 he saw service with AMFORCE and on 7 December he was accidentally injured suffering multiple detonator wounds to his right hand whilst serving with the 63rd Australian Infantry Battalion.
