Son of Mrs. E. and the late Cpl. Bickfords, Wholesale Chemists.  He enlisted in November 1941 and served in the Garrison Battalion and in August 1942 was transferred to the 2nd Australian Armoured Tank Battalion.

His father Cpl. J.J. Jones, was a member of the original 10th Battalion in the Great War, then with the 50th Battalion in Egypt.  He served in France and Belgium, gaining the Military Medal and the Croiz-de-Guere.  He returned to Australia after an absence of four years.
