Son of Mrs. E. and the late Cpl. James Jeffery JONES of 19 Church Avenue, Norwood, SA. Educated at Norwood Public School, George was fond of all outdoor sports and played lacrosse for the Legacy Club. In civilian life he was employed at Bests Chemists and later joined the staff of A.M. Bickfords, Wholesale Chemists. He enlisted in November 1941 and served in the Garrison Battalion and in August 1942 was transferred to the 2nd Australian Armoured Tank Battalion.
His father Cpl. J.J. Jones, was a member of the original 10th Battalion in the Great War, then with the 50th Battalion in Egypt. He served in France and Belgium, gaining the Military Medal and the Croiz-de-Guere. He returned to Australia after an absence of four years.
