Biography
John Lloyd(Jack)PIKE was born at PIKES CORNER, Cowell, at the home of his Grandparents William(Blacksmith & Farmer) and Harriet PIKE. His parents were William(farmer) and Enid PIKE. His father died when he was 5 years old, and his Mother would not let him enlist until he was 21.
He enlisted at Cowell on the 27th of March,1916 and was in the 14th reinforcements, 27th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force after training at Mitcham Camp, South Australia.
He joined the Battalion in France, was promoted to Corporal and on the 20th of September, 1917 was awarded the Military Medal.His citation reads: "On 20th September, 1917 at Westhoek, this N.C.O. was a member of a Lewis Gun Section.No. 1&2 were put out of action and the gun buried.He recovered the Gun,quickly reorganised the Section, took command and showed great judgement in establishing a post at a good tactical point on our line.He sprained his ankle but remained on duty and finally carried his Gun from the line to Kruisstraat.
He was discharged on the 16th of January, 1919, and returned to Kimba, where he took up the GM Dealership.He carried out various duties for the DOD between the wars and reenlsted during WW11.His cousin Allan Lloyd PIKE, b. 12/04/1916, was named for him and served in 2/10 Bn, AIF 20/10/1939-04/12/1945.Jack died in 1958 and is buried at Kimba
