On the 18th May 1966, Private Donald Newton, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1204), onsetter (a person responsible for loading and unloading the cage or lift at the bottom of a mine shaft), from Back Creek, Minmi, New South Wales, died at Wallsend or Minmi, N.S.W., age 73. Date of burial unknown. Right Hand Side, Section 13, Plot 041.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 17th December 1892 to William Snr, died 25.5.1932, Minmi, N.S.W., age 72, buried at Right Hand Side, Section 13, Plot 043, from Back Creek, Minmi, New South Wales and Maitland Road, Minmi, N.S.W., and Sarah Newton nee Ritten, died 4.12.1947, Minmi, N.S.W., age 85, sleeping at Right Hand Side, Section 13, Plot 043, from Back Creek, Minmi, New South Wales and Maitland Road, Minmi, N.S.W.; husband of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Susannah? Newton nee Daniels, married 1932, West Wallsend, N.S.W., died 5.1.1992, district unknown, age 91, 25 years a widow, sleeping at Right Hand Side, Section 13, Plot 041. Donald enlisted on the 25th January 1916, age 23 years 1 month, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.

Wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (multiple GSW left arm, severe, First Battle of Passchendaele, Belgium).

Transferred to England 17.10.1917.

Amputation left arm 17.10.1917.

Granted furlough from 21.2.1918 to 7.3.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 12.7.1918.

Mr. Newton’s name has been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Donald’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
