Ray Waye was born at Willunga and had many relatives in and near town. When he enlisted at Keswick, Ray was nearly 20. He had a medium complexion, with grey eyes and dark hair, was 5' 8" (173cm) tall and weighed 174lbs (79Kg).
Ray embarked on 23 October 1915 for Egypt with the 11th/(th Light Horse Reinforcements and served in the Middle East Campaign from January 1916. Ray was made a Shoeing Smith on 26 November 1916 and acted as Temporary Farrier on two occasions.
He returned home on 13 April 1919 having served 3years and 315 days. Ray lived at Cumberland Park, where he died on 20 April 1973, aged 77years. He never married.
