Younger of two brothers (George and Leonard) who served in WWII, Private Leonard John Sparkes (Service Nos:S30844/S51494/SX24773) initially served in the ACMF with 10 Casualty Clearing Station from 15 December 1941 to 5 August 1942 - Nursing Orderly. Private Sparkes enlisted in the AIF on 6 August 1942 'in the field', and served with 110 Casualty Clearing Station at Milne Bay (12 August 1942 - 29 May 1944) and Tarakan (24 March 1945 - 3 January 1946). Private Sparkes was attached to 110 Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Discharge on 5 April 1946.
Len was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1920, fourth of five children of George Frederick Sparkes (b1886 in London, England) and Dorothy Maud Neale (b1889 in London, England). George (who worked as a Paper Boy and Wood Machinist) and Dorothy married in London in 1910, and immigrated that year, arriving in Melbourne on board the Salamis. George and Dorothy moved to Adelaide, and in 1915 George enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:1814). Following his Discharge in 1919, he and Dorothy settled in Adelaide where they raised their family and George worked as a Wood Machinist.
Len, a keen cricket player known for his batting skills, was working in Adelaide as a Junior Clerk when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge, Len returned to Adelaide, where he worked as a Cllerk/Paymaster until his death in 1989.
