Down John Harold was born in 28 November 1893 in Torrington England. He grew up at Norwood, South Australia. He had black hair, dark brown eyes, he was approximately 5'9 tall and identified the Church of England as his religion. John married Eileen Lilian Elizabeth Down in 2 October 1915. He worked as the telephone electrician before he enlisted 2 August 1915.

He served on the Western Front in France

John returned to Australia on 9 March in 1919. He also served in WW2, enlisting at the age of 48 to the Citizen's Military Forces as an Officer.
 
Later, he was moved between South Australia and Victoria, eventually working at Land Headquarters in Melbourne in the Printing & Stationery Services Branch, continuing his appointment as an Assistant. After frontline wartime duties, this officer continued in supply and administration, especially in printing and stationery logistics for the Army. He was steadily promoted and by 1947 was in charge of a whole depot. He finished up as a Captain commanding a depot in South Australia before retiring in June 1947. John lived a long life and passed away 10 November 1965.
