Corporal Donald Frank Kempster (Service Nos:S20493/SX23010) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 6 February 1940 as a Private, and was 'in the field' at Warrawong NSW when he enlisted in the AIF on 22 July 1942 - graded Mechanic and regraded as Fitter. Promoted to Corporal in 1943, he served at Adelaide River and Darwin NT (12 September 1942 - 20 November 1944) with 10/48th Battalion, and was attached to 10th Battalion at Discharge on 12 August 1945. His father Allen (Private; Service No:3856) served in WWI.
Don was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1918 to Allen Kempster (b1890 in Magill, South Australia) and Mildred (Millie) Victoria Wickham (b1897 in Kensington, South Australia). Allen (a Labourer) and Millie married in 1915 in Adelaide and, following Allen's discharge from the Army, settled in Adelaide (Norwood and Magill) where they raised their family and Allen worked as a Labourer.
Don graduated from the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts in 1938, and worked in Adelaide as a Commercial Artist and Opaquer. In the early 1940s whilst serving in the Army, Don married Dorothy Joan (aka Joan) and, following his Discharge, lived in Adelaide where he worked for the Postmaster General's Department as a Motor Mechanic. In 1995 Don was living in Onkaparinga, and was in Adelaide when he died in 2009. Joan died in 2007.
