Sergeant Leonard Samuel Canney (Service No:SX22110) initially served with the ACMF (Private; Service No:S48795) with Australian Defence Canteen Service (20 March 1942 - 18 August 1942). On 19 August 1942, Lance Sergeant Canney enlisted in the AIF, serving with Australian Army Canteen Service (AASC) and was promoted to Corporal then Sergeant. Sergeant Canney was attached to 30 Australian Army Canteen Service at Discharge on 3 December 1945.

The eldest of two children, Leonard was born in 1914 to Samuel Mackie Canney (b1893 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Elsie May Stevenson (b1894 in Sydney, NSW). Samuel and Elsie married in 1912 in Adelaide, South Australia.

Leonard worked as a Commercial Traveller in Adelaide, where in 1936 he married first wife Margaret Marion McBurney(b1920 in Adelaide, South Australia). Following Margaret's death in 1954, Leonard remarried in 1956 to Jean Mary Kernick (b1920 in Adelaide, South Australia). Leonard died in 1979 and Jean in 2002.
