Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell

100 years ago today, on the 26th November 1920, Private Albert Joseph O’Leary, 1st Battalion (Reg No-5751), saw mill hand from 84 and 51 James Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 8 Ackeron Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of one (Irene Pamela), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 26. CATHOLIC 1-20. 48.

Born at Cooranbong, New South Wales on the 30th December 1893 to Timothy J and Emma Jane O'Leary of Walsh Street, Mayfield East, N.S.W.; husband of Elsie O'Leary nee Whitehouse (married 1916, Merewether, N.S.W., died 1986 as McLEAN) of 19 Patrick Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 138 Newington Road, Marrickville, N.S.W., Albert enlisted July 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted Norfolk War Hospital March 1917 (broncho pneumonia), and wounded in action - 4.10.1917 (GSW left thigh), 20.9.1918 (GSW left forearm), Albert was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 19th April 1919.

I have not located Mr O’Leary’s name inscribed on the Cooranbong Public School Roll of Honour or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

There is no indication inscribed on Albert’s headstone that he served and suffered during his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies to honour his duty for God, King and Country.

Younger brother Timothy L (Reg No-5750, 1st Battalion, born 1899, died 1977, Newcastle Memorial Park Cemetery & Crematorium) also served 1st A.I.F.
Many thanks to Kerrie Dean and Doug Beale for the notification.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for official commemoration.
Lest We Forget.
