4 Feb 1917: Wounded AIF WW1, Lieutenant, 2569, 27th Infantry Battalion, " We went up to one of the outposts, and I was standing on top looking at the wiring about 9.15 a.m., when a machine gun from the Butte caught me. I thought a shell had burst, & a square of broken ice had hit me in the stomach. Anyway, I dropped into a shell hole full of ice, & downed my britches to see what had happened. I was hit in the penis, and it gave me such a dreadful pain. I didn’t feel anything else. Col. Norrie & a couple of the fellows hopped out & started to had to be borrowed. It turned out I was hit in the left thigh & the right

James Montrose Maughan served as a lieutenant throughout the First World War until he was shot in the thigh and wrist. He later served in World War Two, where he was killed in a training accident.
