WELCH Arthur Walter Sydney James OStJ MB BS
1898 - 1980
Arthur Walter Sydney James Welch was born, on 15th June 1898, in Adelaide. He was the son of Walter Henry and Angelina Jane Welch. He was educated at Adelaide High School and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating in 1923. He married Eva Muriel Jones, on 8th April 1924, at the Parkside West Methodist Church. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Jones, of Western Australia. Welch was a committed member of the Methodist church and authored a book entitled Methodist Order of Knights: South Australian Province, published in 1935.
Welch had previously served in the CMF, at the rank of captain, in 6 Cav FdAmb and 101 General Hospital, before he was called up for full-time duty on 28th February 1941. He transferred to 108 Aust Conv Depot, Woodside. He enlisted in the 2/AIF on 17th July 1942, while serving at 108 Conv Depot, and was promoted to major on 1st September 1942. Welch named his wife Eva as his next of kin and they were living at Park Terrace, Wayville. He left for the L of C area, NT, on 28th August 1943. However, he had several admissions, during 1944, to 107 AGH, 105 AMH and the Kapara Convalescent Home, Glenelg, SA, for polyarthritis, which resulted in a lower medical classification and he was consequently unable to be transferred to the 2/AIF. He then was appointed, as OC, to 111 Aust Conv Depot from 108 Aust Conv Depot and after further medical re-classification relinquished his appointment on 1st March 1945 and was placed on the Reserve of Officers, in April 1945.
Before the war, Welch had a position as the Medical Officer to the South Australian Police Force, and he resumed this position after his discharge. He was a member of the AMA and member of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Arthur Walter Sydney James Welch died in April 1980. His wife Eva survived him.
