DORNAN John Ernest MB BS DPharm

1909 – 1959

John Ernest Dornan was born in Fremantle, Western Australia, on 3rd October 1909.  He was the son of Frederick Ernest and Ruby Appleton Dornan, in Fremantle, Western Australia. He was educated at the Perth Modern School and studied for the Diploma in Pharmacy at the University of Western Australia, graduating in 1932. He married Mabel Irene Jones, the daughter of John Henry Schneider on 5th April 1937. She was previously married to Cyril Arthur Jones. Dornan studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1940.

Dornan enlisted in the 2/AIF, on 5th July 1942, when he was serving in the CMF at Adelaide Fixed Defences at Fort Largs, SA.  He named his wife, Irene, as his next of kin and they were living in Port Wakefield, SA, but soon moved to Lincoln Avenue, Reade Park, SA.  He remained in 4 Fortress Coy at Fort Largs, at the rank of captain, until September 1942, and was then posted to 3rd FdAmb.  He had a short detachment to 59 Camp Hospital and then to Townsville for deployment to Port Moresby, PNG with 3rd FdAmb, on 10th February 1943, on the Montoya. He took a course in medical treatment in chemical warfare and allotted to 113 Aust Con Depot, in June 1943. He remained in PNG until he returned to Australia on 3rd March 1944. After two months in Australia, he returned to Port Moresby and Morotai, on 6th June 1944, and detached to 2/4th AGH. He left Morotai on 18th December 1945 and returned to 4 MD and posted as MO, SA section Inter-Services Medical Wing Demob Centre. His appointment was terminated on 19th February 1946.

Following the war, Dornan returned to his practice in Port Wakefield, SA. John Ernest Dornan died on 12th March 1959.
