Born in London England in 1887, Richard was the fourth of six children of James Horatio Utting (b1856 in London, England) and Therese Allison Haynes (b1851 in London, England). James (a Merchant) and Therese (a Milliner) married in 1880 in Yorkshire, England and settled in London where they raised their family. James worked as a Wine and Spirits Merchant and Licensed Victualler and in the 1910 Census he was an Insurance Agent - James Jnr was an Apprentice Mercantile Marine, Honora was a Pupil Teacher, Arthur had married and left home, Richard and twins Philip and Alexander were Scholars. By 1911, James was living alone, with his occupation listed as Lecturer, Therese was living in Burma with James Jnr (a Master Mariner and River Pilot) and his family), Honora and Arthur were living in England with their families and Alexander, Philip and Richard had emigrated to Australia.

Richard was working in Perth WA as a Porter with the WAGR in 1911 when he married Annie Laura Poulson (b1889 in Suffolk, England) - Annie was a Domestic Cook in Essex, England in 1911 when she emigrated. Richard and Annie settled in Perth WA where Richard was employed by WAGR as a Clerk until his retirement in 1958. In August 1917 Richard enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No52005) and served in France with 28th Infantry Battalion. Following his Discharge in May 1919 he returned to WA. Brother Philip (Service No:36) was KiA in Belgium in 1917.

In October 1940 Richard enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W31612) and was attached to Y Coy 5 Garrison Battalion when he Discharged in January 1942. Brother James and his six sons served in WWII as did Richard's sons Philip (Service No:415287) and Roger (Service No:F5170)

Richard died in 1958 and Annie in 1972.
