Douglas Barber was the 8th of 12 children born to James George and Ruby Millicent (nee Daniel)
Doug was a keen amateur naturalist and enjoyed bushwalking, bird life and geology. Many happy years were spent camping, all around Australia, but particularly in the Flinders Ranges.
On 27 August 1947 he married Nora Kathleen Cotton and settled in Whyalla, where he worked as a Dental Technician; they had 5 children.
After retirement, Doug and Nora moved to Brisbane, after his death Doug was buried in Stirling North Cemetary, close to his beloved Flinders Ranges
