PRIVATE FRANCIS JOSEPH PATRICK NAUGHTON
SERVICE No: SX19011
Born at Adelaide on 30 March 1922, Francis was the son of Mary Veronica O’Donoghue and Michael Francis Naughton. After serving a three year apprenticeship the 20 year old lathe operator enlisted at Wayville on 9 December 1942.
Francis was posted to 34 Infantry Training Battalion in Victoria where, after 2 months of training, he was attached to a Cookery School. On 24 June 1943 he marched into the newly formed 2 Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) in Canungra, Queensland. The unit was formed to pass on the lessons learnt from Kokoda and it was a requirement for all reinforcements to pass through a Jungle Warfare battalion before completing their training. After being graded a Group II Cook Francis was transferred to the Australian Army Catering Corp and undertook 17 Bread Making Course which qualified him to bake bread in the field under any conditions.
With the cessation of hostilities Francis volunteered to serve overseas with the British Commonwealth Occupational Force in Japan. Now a 1st Grade Cook he embarked from Sydney aboard ‘Westralia” on 8 December 1947 and disembarked in Kure where the operational headquarters of the BCOF located. During June 1948 Francis went absent without leave and was sentenced to 14 days detention in 22 Australian Detention Barracks. Again in August he went AWL and this time was sentenced to 28 days detention in 22 Australian Detention Barracks. During 1949 Francis served with 47 Field Baking Platoon, BCOF Field Baking Platoon and in September with Headquarters BCOF.
Twice Francis was accidently injured. In December 1949 he received a 40 millimetre laceration to the parietal region of his scalp and in June 1950 he was burnt by a motor cycle exhaust and the burn above the wrist of his right forearm became infected. In February Francis was transferred to the British Commonwealth Corrective Establishment as a cook until he embarked from Iwakuni, Japan on 5 January 1953. Francis was discharged from the Australian Military Forces on 27 April 1953.
Francis died on 1 June 2022, 2 months after his 100th birthday.
