James Whelan

James Whelan was born on the 8th February 1907 in Hamilton, Scotland.

He arrived in South Australia aboard the 'Orama' in December 1925 with his parents Robert and Margaret and his older brother Robert and younger brother John. Grandmother Mary and an Aunt and her children accompanied them to Port Pirie. Another Aunt settled in Port Pirie shortly after.

James joined his brother working for the BHAS Smelters as a storeman. On his 21st birthday, James married Hilda May Smith, daughter of William Smith and Katey Walters.

James' father Robert was a prisoner of war in WWI and all 3 brothers enlisted in the armed forces in WWII. Younger brother John joined the Navy.

James served in Darwin and later sent to Heidelberg Hospital in Melbourne for medical treatment.

James died on the 14th October 1980 in Port Pirie and is remembered by his daughter Peggy and grandchildren.
